NASW-RI is in support of this bill for two main reasons: 1) payday loans are extremely dangerous and predatory to impoverished communities, and 2) we believe in the basic human right to housing and the removal of barriers to access this right.

3/3/2023

NASW-RI Chapter prioritized H5006 equality in abortion coverage, filed by Representative Kazarian. As social workers, we follow a code of ethics, including respecting the right to our client’s self-determination. This self-determination includes the right to abortion, which means abortion must be accessible. In RI, we can do this by including abortion coverage for state employees and those enrolled in the Medicaid program.

S378 will have long-term beneficial individual and societal effects because early education enhances a child’s lifelong academic and social successes.

In Support of SB591

The National Association of Social Workers - Rhode Island Chapter strongly supports Senator Miller’s Bill 591. As stated in Senator Miller’s bill, the 2017 Milliman report shows that Rhode Island patients were 4.28 times more likely to seek treatment from an out of network mental health provider rather than from a primary health care provider. Yet, mental health professionals received 23.4% less reimbursement than other specialists. Paying behavioral health providers less than their counterparts on the medical side of an insurance plan is a violation of mental health parity laws and could be rectified through passage of this important bill.
